Week of Action 2015

PhotoGrid_1432648545430We stand at a crossroads. Rhode Island and Massachusetts state governments are currently considering bills that would require food to bear truthful labels about the use of GMO ingredients. The bills have a lot of support, but the opposition is powerful – so much so, that they have thus far succeeded in stalling the progress of this legislation.

We have an opportunity to stand with Connecticut, Maine, and Vermont in a regional push for common sense transparency in food labeling.

But it won’t happen on its ownIt’s up to people like you and me – the electorate, the consumers, the eaters of our states – to let our voices be heard.

This Saturday’s March Against Monsanto marks the beginning of our 2015 Right to Know Rhode Island Week of Action. Each day of the week, we invite you to engage your friends, family, and elected officials in different ways, so that we can send a firm, united message – it’s our right to know what’s in our food.

Here’s a preview of the week’s events:

Saturday, 5/23 – March Against Monsanto

March Against Monsanto is happening at 10:30 am in Burnside Park (2 Kennedy Plaza) in Providence. Be there.

Tuesday, 5/26 – Call Your Legislator

Make a call or email your elected officials to thank the sponsors and supporters of the labeling bill, and urge the opponents to get on board. Reach out to 3 friends and have them do the same.

Wednesday, 5/27 – Grow the Network

We are all in this together. There is truly power in numbers, and support from Rhode Island based businesses is instrumental in getting these labeling bills passed. Visit or call your local farms, businesses, community groups, and organizations, and ask them to join us as Network Partners – all they have to do is fill out this form.

Friday, 5/29 – Stop the Dark Act

The industry opponents of truth in labeling are pressuring the federal government to outlaw GMO labeling bills on the state level. Send a message loud and clear to your Congresspeople in DC – we have a right to truth in labeling!

Saturday, 5/30 – Targeting Leadership

We’ll end the week with some boots-on-the-ground excitement. Senator Josh Miller (District 28) is the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services, where the GMO labeling bill is currently being held. We will canvass the neighborhoods in his district, gathering support from his constituents.

Send Senator Miller an email (sen-miller@rili.state.ri.us) and let him know that you support S549, and labels on GMO foods!

More information will be posted as each day approaches. You are encouraged to take action in as many ways as possible, but our collective voice will speak loud and clear. We have a right to know what’s in our food!
