Dear Rhode Island Elected Officials:

We, the undersigned representatives of organizations, businesses, associations and professional practices, urge you to support the passage of proposed GMO labeling legislation this year, which would mandate the labeling of foods containing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). GMOs are found in over 80% of all processed food on grocery store shelves in America, but because of the lack of mandated labeling, consumers are shopping and eating blind. Consumers should have the right to choose for themselves whether or not to feed their families GMOs.

GMOs were introduced into the food supply in 1996 without any long-term safety studies. Federal authorities do not perform or require any independent safety testing, and instead rely on assessments performed by the manufacturers. A growing body of scientific, medical, and anecdotal evidence connects the production and consumption GMO crops with health risks, environmental damage, and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights. Most GMOs are engineered for herbicide tolerance, and as a result, use of herbicides like Roundup has increased 15 times since GMOs were introduced and crops now have higher herbicide residues. The Environmental Protection Agency has recently increased “tolerable” levels of the chemical in our food.

More than 30 new GMO crops are currently in field trials, and once they are released they can not be recalled. Citizens are not waiting for the federal government to take action. Since 2013 Connecticut, Maine and Vermont have passed GMO labeling bills and more than half of the states in the US are currently considering similar legislation. GMO labeling will grant US citizens the same rights that people in 64 countries already enjoy: Japan, China, Australia, Russia, New Zealand and the entire European Union already mandate the labeling of GMOs. National polls consistently show that more than 90% of Americans want GMOs labeled, but the powerful biotech lobby has so far succeeded in keeping this information from the public.

We have a right to know if our food is produced through the use of genetic engineering. Genetically Modified foods (GMOs) have not been proven safe, and so we demand the fundamental freedom of choice that can only come from government-mandated labeling of all GM food products. We support you in taking action to ensure the passage of a mandatory GMO labeling law.
